Families of persons with disabilities carry a burden that is emotional as well as physical and economic. Counselling is not a luxury for them — it is a necessity.
Families of persons with disabilities face and experience various challenges physically, socially and economically, but above all they are emotionally burdened — dealing with deep sadness, depression, stress, stigma, anger, loneliness and discrimination from society and, at times, from their own family members.
That is why counselling matters. When families are supported to talk about what they are carrying, the person with a disability is no longer treated as a problem to be hidden, and the whole household begins to move.
